FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS
The glory of a Bux-Mont League championship
was brought to Lansdale High School this year by its undefeated and
untied football team. Thirty-three boys, coached by Mr. Cowan and Mr.
Crawford, and led by Captain Bob Graham, made Bux-Mont history by not
only winning every game, but remaining unscored upon until the final
skirmish.
From the very beginning of the year
prospects looked good with ten returning lettermen. Although, in the
early days of the campaign there were a few minor injuries, none were
sufficiently serious to hinder the progress of the fighting Maroon aggregation.
Inaugurating the new football field,
the Lansdale team started the season by overwhelmingly defeating Hatboro,
33-O. In this opening encounter, and all through the season, the Cowanites
showed excellent teamwork and power in the line and backfield. In the
second game, at Sell-Perk, Lansdale scored after three brilliant plays
had been executed. The final score of that game was 25-0.
In the next game, at home, the gridmen
downed Quakertown by the decisive score 0f 26-0. A week later, slowed
up by a wet field, the powerful Lansdale team defeated Springfield 13-0.
Although a source of foreboding to many, the Maroon and White easily
overcame Jenkintown to the tune of 30-0. In the next game Souderton
bowed to an inevitable defeat, Lansdale rolling up the largest score
of the season, 38-0.
After two weeks, the determined
Maroon Marauders met the Ambler Trojans for the deciding game of the
exciting championship fight. Thrice the spotless Lansdale record of
not being scored upon was dangerously threatened but the mighty forward
wall held against the terrific drives. In the second period the Cowanites
scored when Stuart caught a pass from Cope on the fifty-yard stripe
and ran for a touchdown; a pass from Watt to Schmidt converted the extra
point giving the visitors a 7-0 lead. In the third period, the Maroon
and White struck again, Watt receiving a pass from Schmidt and racing
for a touchdown. Bricker's line plunge gave Lansdale the extra point,
and the score stood at 14-0, bringing Lansdale its first Bux-Mont League
championship.
On Thanksgiving Day, Lansdale traveled
to Doylestown for the annual classic. With the championship safe, Lansdale
was hoping to keep its unscored upon record clear. However, this was
thwarted by a single touchdown, the final score standing at 14-7.
Five players were elected to the
AII-Bux-Mont Conference team. They were Captain Bob Graham. Captain-elect
Bob Bricker, Franny Drissel, Herb Fretz, and Jack Watt who was named
honorary captain 0f the mythical team.
Much credit is due the co-managers,
Joe Burgess and Sam Moyer, for their excellent work in caring for the
field and equipment. Dr. Paul Moyer, caring for the injured, was an
invaluable aid to the team.
Coach Harry Kneedler's Junior High football team brought to Lansdale
the championship of the Bux-Mont Junior High School League, in the first
year of its existence.
The team was led by co-captains
Bob Scott and Dominic Virgilio. The Junior High gridmen were, in many
cases, smaller and younger than their opponents, but the morale of the
team was high. Much is expected in following years because of the excellent
record and fighting spirit.
Playing their first game at home,
Junior High downed Weldon 26-0, and traveled to Springfield, easily
defeating the homesters by a score of 14-0. Quakertown was the next
team to fall before the Maroon juniors, to the tune of 7-0, at home.
Then they played two games away, defeating Thomas Williams 7-0 and tying
Ambler at 14-14.
In the final game 0f the season,
on the home field, the Kneedlermen clinched the championship with a
victory over Abington by the score of 12-0.
