The 1950 edition of the Lansdale High
School the measure of the Interacademic League team football team returned
from Camp Onas in good condition and well-drilled in fundamentals. Leading
the team into its first game with Bangor were Head Coach Ken Poust, Assistants
Russ Fisher and Ken Whitney, and Co-Captains Tony Famularo and Jimi Curley.
The result was a 14-6 win for the Huskies who had to come hack from a
0-6 deficit.
In another pre-season ganle the Huskies
traveled to Berwyn to dedicate its new field. After four years of trying,
Berwyn defeated them 18-6, the only Lansdale score being a Lerro-to-Shrader
pass.
Lansdale opened the league season
against a stulhorn Hatboro team. It was a hard-fought battle, LHS finally
winning 12-0.
September 29 saw Penn Charter invade
Lansdale for a non-league game. The Huskies took
by a 27-6 score. It was an impressive victory with time Huskies looking
very formidable.
The following week the Maroon faced
the Champion Upper Moreland Golden Bears. After a close first half the
Willow Grove eleven overpowered the Huskies. The final score was 21-0
as the Bears marched on to their second consecutive league championship.
The next Friday night the Huskies
played host to Quakertown in an effort to atone for their defeat of the
previous week. Two long runs by Fran Lerro put them ahead, and Lansdale
coasted to a 20-6 win for its twenty-seventh win in thirty-one games with
the Quakers.
The following week the Maroon traveled
to Souderton. The Souderton team, their strongest in many years, played
an inspired game and led the Huskies in the first quarter. The Maroon
then recovered and emerged victorious 20-6.
The next game was with Anmbler. This
proved to he the thriller of the year. It seemed as if this was destined
to be a dark afternoon for the Huskies, as the Trojans scored two touchdowns
early in the first quarter. Showing their ability to come back, the Lansdale
boys then scored two touchdowns and an important conversion to win 13-12.
The Huskies amassed one of their larger
of the season against Sell-Perk. Although in front by only a small 12-7
margin entering the last period, Lansdale, led by “Tex” Kingsbauer,
then scored twenty-five points to win 37-7.
The following Saturday afternoon Lansdale
journeyed to Springfield. It was a bitter fray, the Spartans finally winning
19-7 as the Maroon mbsorbed its third defeat of the season.
The final game, as usual, was the
annual Thanksgiving Day game with Doylestown. The
Huskies entered the game determined to make this an inmpressive one, and
they did. When the smoke cleared, Lansdale had a 47-7 triumph in its pocket.
Ron Robinson received the Most Valuable
Player Award, a gold, engraved football that is given by Irwin Ford to
the outstanding player of this game. The award is earned on the basis
of a point system.
The over-all log for the season was
eight wins and three defeats. Winning six of eight league games, Lansdale
finished in a tie for second place with Ambler. Fran Lerro and Phil Calafati
were elected to the All Bux-Mont first teani. On the second team were
Bob Shrader and Wes Kingsbauer, with Tony Famnularo and Jim Curley receiving
honorable mention. The Most Valuable Player Award was well-earned by Fran
Lerro, and Bob Schrader was awarded the Most Improved Player Award.
